The Relations That Make a Cup a Cup
A small object shows how identity can be real, practical, and irreducibly dependent on what a body can do in a world.
Thesis
A cup is not merely a lump with a name. Its material structure, capacities, history, and place in human practice cooperate to make it the kind of thing it is, without making its identity arbitrary or merely mental.
Start with an ordinary object

There is a cup on a desk. It has a curved wall, a hollow interior, a handle, and a mass. We can pick it up, fill it, wash it, chip it, or put it away. Nothing about this scene seems to require metaphysics. Yet the cup is a good test of metaphysical habits because its identity feels obvious while depending on many distinctions that we usually leave implicit.
The cup is not identified by one microscopic ingredient. Replace a molecule, repaint its surface, or move it to another room and it remains a cup. Remove its ability to hold a drink, and we may call the result a sculpture, a shard, or a failed cup. The boundary is not arbitrary, but neither is it given by a single hidden essence. It is a pattern of structure and use that tolerates some changes and rules out others.
Notice how much work the word “can” performs. A capacity is not a claim that the cup is currently containing tea; it is a stable possibility supported by the object’s arrangement. Such possibilities let us explain and predict. They also show why an object can be relationally characterized without being reduced to a person’s present act of recognition.
Capacity is not a private association

To say that a cup can contain liquid is to describe a physical capacity. Its geometry, surface properties, strength, and orientation make a difference to what happens when water is poured into it. The capacity is relational because it concerns an interaction between the cup, a liquid, gravity, and a task. It is not subjective: a vessel does not become watertight because someone believes it is.
Human practice adds another layer. A mug with a handle is designed for a hand; a ceremonial cup carries a social history; a measuring cup is defined partly by a standardized scale. These roles are not reducible to atoms, but they are not ghostly either. They depend on manufacturing, bodies, conventions, and coordinated expectations. Their reality is institutional and embodied, with consequences if the relevant relations fail.
A failed capacity can be informative. A cracked mug still has the geometry of a cup, but its relation to heat or liquid has changed. A laboratory may retain it as an experimental sample, while a kitchen removes it from service. Different descriptions pick out different relations, yet the crack and its consequences are not made up by those descriptions.
Borderline cases are not defects in thought. They reveal that classification serves purposes while remaining answerable to structure. The same vessel can be a cup in one conversation, an artifact in another, and evidence of fatigue in a materials lab. Those uses overlap because the object has real features; they diverge because no single word exhausts its history and capacities. Precision about the purpose makes the differences illuminating rather than confusing. It also lets us distinguish a disagreement about words from a disagreement about facts. Two people may use cup differently while agreeing about volume, material, and whether the vessel leaks. Language is flexible; the consequences of the object are not.
Aristotle and the subject of change

Aristotle’s categories help explain why ordinary object talk remains useful. A substance is a subject that can have properties: this cup can be blue, warm, or cracked while remaining the same subject. The distinction protects us from confusing a thing with every temporary condition. It also gives us a vocabulary for practical reasoning, where an object must be tracked through alterations.
But the substance picture can be overextended into the idea of complete independence. The cup’s persistence depends on a continuity of material organization and on dispositions that show up in interactions. The fact that a cup remains one cup when moved does not show that it has an identity untouched by every context. It shows that some relations are stable enough to support reidentification. The classical insight survives, but with a more careful account of dependence.
The cup as a process

A manufactured cup has a history. Clay or glass was formed, fired, cooled, inspected, transported, and placed in a setting where its capacities matter. Use changes it: repeated heating can stress a material, a crack can widen, and stains can alter its surface. The object persists through a managed process rather than by remaining numerically identical in every respect. To understand the cup is partly to understand the routes by which its present organization came to be.
The same idea appears in living objects, where the process is more obvious. A cell remains itself by regulating exchanges; an organism survives by repair and metabolism. A cup is not alive, but its identity also has temporal conditions. If it is ground into powder, there may be matter left but not the organized object. A noun compresses a history into a handle. Explanation reopens the history when the handle is not enough.
Physics at the edge of the example

Physics does not say that a cup has no properties apart from observers. Its mass, composition, shape, and temperature can be measured with reproducible procedures. Quantum theory does, however, caution against assuming that every system carries a classical catalogue of definite values independent of every interaction. The scale and isolation conditions matter, and macroscopic stability usually reflects intense coupling to an environment.
The lesson is not that a cup has no determinate state until someone enters the room. It is that the language of state must be matched to the scale and the question. A macroscopic description can be objective and highly successful even when its underlying constituents are governed by a theory that resists classical separability.
Decoherence helps explain why a cup presents a robust shape and location rather than visible interference among many alternatives. Light, air, and internal degrees of freedom continually carry information about its position and surface. This is a model of effective classicality, not an account in which a human gaze creates the cup. The ordinary object is physically stable because of its relations to many systems, whether or not anyone is present to name it.
When does the kind change?

Suppose the handle breaks. We may still call the object a cup, because containing liquid remains possible. Suppose the base develops a hole. Now its practical identity is under pressure. A museum conservator, a potter, and a child may draw the line differently because they ask different questions, but their answers remain constrained by the object’s dimensions and capacities. There is no single context-free test for every use of “cup,” yet there is also no free choice.
This graded identity is common in science. Species boundaries, clouds, ecosystems, and storms can be real while having fuzzy edges. A category can track a stable cluster of relations without naming an indivisible essence. The right response to borderline cases is not to conclude that all categories are illusions. It is to ask what explanatory and practical work the category performs, and which features make it reliable for that work.
A small lesson about realism

The cup therefore sits between two errors. One error treats it as a self-sufficient atom of reality, fully specified before it can touch anything. The other treats it as a projection that exists only because a person finds it useful. A relational realism takes the middle path: the cup is a physically organized thing whose identity is expressed through capacities, histories, and social practices that no individual can simply decree.
This middle path changes how we look at larger entities. A person is more than a list of relations, but relationships can partly constitute a role and a life. An institution is not a mysterious object behind its procedures, but procedures can be real patterns with material effects. A thing becomes more intelligible, not less real, when we ask what sustains it. The cup is modest evidence for a broad philosophical discipline.
Open research directions

Philosophers and scientists still debate how to distinguish intrinsic properties from dispositional or relational ones, and how object-like entities emerge at one scale from processes at another. In quantum theory, the transition from microscopic dynamics to stable macroscopic records remains an active foundations problem even though decoherence is quantitatively successful. In cognitive science, researchers ask how agents learn categories that track useful structure without treating every boundary as absolute.
The next step is not to declare that the cup is secretly a mind or that matter is only language. It is to connect formal models of stability and causal capacity with experiments and ordinary classification. We lack a final theory of objecthood, but the example supports a concrete program: measure which capacities survive change, model how boundaries emerge, and trace how social uses depend on physical form.
The cup remains useful precisely because it keeps ontology close to practices where identity can be tested and repaired. Any broader lesson about dependence should remain a practical consequence of careful description, not evidence for a physics of value.
